Set designers are intrinsic to the success of a play, without proper sets, it would not be realistic. You need a background in art and design. A set designer needs to know how to create accurate backgrounds and sets and be skilled in using props and lighting. Familiarity with computer-aided design (CAD) and the practical use of construction tools is also very valuable.
In order to become a stage director you must be well-informed and knowledgeable about the theater. Again, you should attend and read as many plays as you can.
